Our fourth wedding of the Spring was in Charleston, South Carolina last weekend. I was assisting minister to my husband for this one. He had assisted me on the other three. They have all been delightful, happy celebrations; and, each one has been very different.
We arrived in Charleston Saturday afternoon to discover that the annual Spoleto Festival was going on creating lots of traffic downtown. It took us a while to figure out how to get checked into our hotel because there was not even room to pull up anywhere within a block for the valet parking.
The groom had gerously arranged for us to stay at the Mills House.
in historic downtown Charleston. We finally parked in one of the city
garages and my husband walked to the hotel and got a dolly and brought
it back to the parking garage.
With the traffic and problems checking into the hotel, we were a
little late to the rehearsal which was held on the dock at the Maritime Center. For the rehearsal party, the groom's parents had rented the Carolina Belle.
They also hired a great "blue grass" band.
It had rained earlier in the day and began to rain before the
boat returned to dock late Saturday, but most of the evening was ideal
to be touring Charleston Harbor listening to the band with my husband and other wedding guests on the upper deck
before and after dinner was served on the lower deck.
We had time on Sunday afternoon to walk around the city, including the market area. I do not know a great deal about architecture, but even without in-depth knowledge, the architecture of old Charleston is always a feast for the eyes.
The wedding was held on Sunday evening in the National Historic Landmark, Hibernian Hall,
built in 1840.
The church bells of nearby St. Michael's Episcopal
Church just happened to be ringing as the wedding party exited the
building to go across the street to the park for pictures before the
wedding
dinner held in an elegant setting
on the second floor of Hibernian
Hall. Drinks and wonderful appetizers were offered to guests
downstairs while the pictures were being taken. There was a great local
band for the wedding and the dance floor stayed crowded.
My daughter lives in Charleston west of the Ashley River, but she was out of town for the weekend. We had a great Memorial Day lunch with her and her family before we returned to North Carolina on Monday afternoon.
Although there is always a certain amount of stress involved with doing weddings, it was a joy and a privilege that four young adults who spent childhood and teen years in the parishes where we served wanted us to be the officiants for one of the most special days in their lives.
What a wonderful outing for you and your husband--and loved your photos. I'm so glad you have your blog now and a dig cam!

CAIRO — Several thousand women demanding the end of military rule marched through downtown Cairo on Tuesday evening in an extraordinary expression of anger over images of soldiers beating, stripping and kicking female demonstrators in Tahrir Square.
