It's fund-raising time again on the local ETV station. I have mixed feelings about it. I hate the constant, "please send us money;" but, I like the programming.
One of their big tickets for raising money this year is "The Best of Tina Turner" concert. Most of the concert was filmed when she was 60 years old. The concert includes interviews with Tina and footage from earlier years. Tonight was the second time I have watched it.
I last saw Tina Turner live in concert seven years ago. My husband gave me tickets to Tina's concert at the Blockbuster outdoor pavilion in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was one of the things I wanted to do to celebrate my 50th birthday even though the concert was scheduled several months before my big day. I believe it was part of her last concert tour.
It was a wonderful spring evening and the concert was absolutely worth the money and the four-hour round-trip drive. As a person with an illness that severely limits my energy, I am in awe of the energy Tina puts forth when she sings and dances . . . not to mention the shape she is in for her age.
One of the things she said in the interview portion of the ETV presentation was that what she wanted from her music was to make people feel good. She certainly accomplishes that.
I admire Tina Turner for what she has made of herself in spite of a difficult childhood and an abusive marriage. One of the ETV announcer talked a lot about Tina being the essence of a survivor. But, Tina Turner is much more than a survivor. She claimed her life and used her gifts and talents to recreate herself into a major female rock star . . . a major rock star period!
I first saw Tina Turner live when she was with Ike in the mid-1960's, when they were playing what was called during the ETV program, "the Chitlin circuit." They weren't yet well known at the time and were booked into a local beach club near Charleston, South Carolina, where I lived during my high school years.
I have been feeling depressed this week. Tina's singing and dancing was a helpful tonic tonight.
"I will never give in to old age until I become old. And I'm not old yet!" --Tina Turner
THANKS TINA!
CAIRO — Several thousand women demanding the end of military rule marched through downtown Cairo on Tuesday evening in an extraordinary expression of anger over images of soldiers beating, stripping and kicking female demonstrators in Tahrir Square.
